We’re particularly pleased and proud to begin Lodestar Library with (we believe) the first hardcover edition since 1892 of Swin, Swale and Swatchway by Henry Lewis Jones. This hard-to-come-by collection of delightful, light-hearted sailing episodes from the Thames Estuary of late Victorian times was an acknowledged inspiration for Maurice Griffiths and, we may surmise, for Francis B. Cooke, and comes complete with the author’s many contemporary photographs. Your Editor can confirm that the Lobster Smack Inn, just behind the sea-wall at Hole Haven, continues to dispense good cheer to the visiting sailor; just don’t leave your dinghy unattended on the slip. We carry ours to the inn with us — it seems the problem of ‘boys’ has survived to this day.
